On September 27, 2022, Chelsea legend, John Mikel Obi announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.
Mikel Obi confirmed his retirement from football in a post via his official Instagram account.
The former Super captain retired after a successful career with the Nigeria national team and at the club level.
Mikel Obi has played for the likes of Chelsea, Lyn, Tianjin TEDA, Middlesbrough, Trabzonspor, Stoke City and Kuwait SC.
However, DRILOGIST reports what next step Mikel Obi could embark on in the near future after he announced his retirement from football last week.
Speaking with DRILOGIST, Engr. Audu Ojo, the head coach of Dawaki Rangers, an Abuja-based Football Club, expressed confidence that Mikel Obi will promote the young players in Nigeria and Africa.
According to Ojo, Mikel Obi was a good player during his playing career, and he is so much respected.
Ojo said, “My reaction to Mikel Obi’s retirement is that Mikel Obi has played very fantastic football with the Super Eagles and Chelsea as well. He has been a very good player, and we respect him so much.
“Being the fact that he has retired at the age of 35 years, we so much believe that he is going to carry the young ones along and he is going to make sure he promotes the young boys in Nigeria and all over Africa and to see that they can ride on and play good football.”
When asked what would be Mikel Obi’s next step after retirement, Ojo added, “But now that he has retired and we actually loved the way he has retired, no injury, nothing has happened to him, we believe that he is going to do a very good job and he is going to be a football agent who we know that he has equally done a lot of things in the past; we know he is going to continue to do more and more for Nigerians.”
