The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has urged the newly inaugurated Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to help revive the domestic game and bring it to its past glory.
The NPFL has been bedevilled by corruption and lack of sponsorship in recent years.
Currently, the NPFL is not on television compared to other African countries like South Africa, Kenya and Zambia.
There is also no official title sponsor for the Nigerian top flight.
Nigerian clubs have also struggled in CAF competitions.
The IMC was inaugurated in September, replacing the old League Management Company (LMC).
Dare expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the NPFL, which he said was once the pride of the nation.
”Our professional league, which used to be our pride in this country, is sick today and has become a caricature of its old self, which needs urgent attention,” Dare said when he gave an audience to members of the IMC in his office.
Rivers United are the current champions of the NPFL.
