Two former SARS members have been found guilty of extrajudicial killing and condemned to death by hanging by a Port Harcourt High Court.
Shedrack Ibibo, ASP Samuel Chigbu, Magus Awuri, Olisa Emeka, and Ogoligo, five members of the Anti Robbery Squad, were on trial for the deaths of Michael Igwe and Michael Akor while they were in their custody in 2015 in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State for allegedly stealing recharge cards. But when Shedrack Ibibo, Olisa Emeka, and Magus Awuri resumed the trial, Ogoligo and ASP Samuel Chigbu passed away in detention at the Port Harcourt prison.
The trial judge, Justice M.O. Opara, found Magus Awuri and Shedrack Ibibo guilty of conspiracy to murder, while Olisa Emeka was acquitted.Speaking to reporters following the verdict, the state prosecution council expressed satisfaction and claimed that justice had been done.”The court determined that the two were guilty of murdering the two deceased,” she stated. Based on the findings, the court released and cleared Olisa Emeka because the prosecution was unable to establish its case against the last defendant.Hopefully, it will serve as a warning to other cops
The mother of one of those killed, Kathrine Akoro, expressed joy over the verdict and claimed the “policeman will now get a taste of their own medicine.”In 2011, they stole our property and killed my son. My son advised me to pardon them, let them go, and return the items they took. I’ll be alright.I thank God for fighting for me. I am happy.”
