Transport Minister: Railway Unbundling Won’t Cause Job Losses

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) staff has been assured by the minister of transportation, Alh. Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, that there won’t be any job losses when the NRC is finally split up into various entities.

Remember that the federal government declared over two years ago that the NRC will be split up into a number of corporations that would include a regulatory body, a service provider, and other entities. It also established a committee to determine the details of the unbundling, but the group hasn’t turned in any reports to the public. The minister reiterated that as it is presently constituted, the NRC cannot operate optimally, thus necessary reforms and unbundling have become imperative.

The minister charged MOFI to push for the unbundling of the NRC in order to increase its economic viability while continuing to provide Nigerians with top-notch services while speaking to the management team of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) in Abuja, led by the CEO, Dr. Armstrong Katang.

The minister assuaged the worry that the unbundling would result in job losses by stating, “I don’t want the NRC workers to regard the NRC’s unbundling as a danger to their careers.”If the NRC is performing better, we will have higher wages for its employees, better working conditions for its employees, more money for the FG, and the capacity to even create more rail networks as a result.“One of the things I will like to see as the minister of transportation, through MOFI is the unbundling of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

There is a committee set up to unbundle NRC and I will urge you to work with the committee,” he said. The minister noted that similar reforms should be carried out in the railway sector and referred to the benefits of the reforms that had been carried out at the ports.Dr. Armstrong Katang, the Chief Executive Officer of MOFI, stated earlier that the purpose of the visit was to examine ways to improve the collaboration between MOFI and the Ministry of Transportation.
