Kwara governorship: LP contender Abubakar and five others suspended

Comrade Basambo Abubakar, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Kwara state, has been suspended for suspected anti-party actions.

Five additional members were suspended on Tuesday, in addition to the gubernatorial contender.

This comes only three days before the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections on March 18.

The suspended governorship candidate and his accused associates were sanctioned for for anti-party conduct and voter misinformation.

Basambo got into difficulty after announcing on Monday that the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party had joined forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the elections next Saturday.

By implication, the incident generated the idea that Basambo Abubakar’s buildings had crumbled.

The chairman of the Labour Party in Kwara state, Comrade Kehinde Rotimi, told media in Ilorin on Tuesday that the party has not allied with any other political party.

He claimed that the suspended Labour Party gubernatorial candidate violated party regulations.

“We’re here to set the record straight,” he stated. The Labour Party is a political party with a social justice and equality agenda. According to Basambo Abubakar, the Labour Party did not support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kwara state, Shuaib Yaman Abdullahi. He does not have the power to make such a declaration on behalf of the party.

“We are in a very solemn mood right now because of our presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, who was heavily voted for by Nigerians, but the Nigerian system came into existence as usual. He is now contesting the election results in court. So it’s ethically unacceptable for us to come out and say we’re supporting another party in the governor’s race, against our presidential candidate’s preferences.

“As a result, we are not endorsing PDP candidates in any way. Anybody who has done so does so at his own peril.”

Rotimi asked members of the public to dismiss the information since it is deceptive and false, saying that “Labour Party remains one and devoted to the Nigeria project. All of our candidates are running in this Saturday’s election.

The chairman stated that while Basambo Abubakar has the right to free association, the party remains steadfast in its principles and has not endorsed any governorship candidate or joined forces with any political party in the state.
