Domestic airlines have continued to run lean operations due to a lack of passengers after the results of the presidential election were declared amid unrest
Checks at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja, Lagos revealed that only very few passenger movements were seen in each of the domestic terminals.Airlines reportedly cut their flights by less than 50%.
Nonetheless, despite the airlines’ resumed operations, they are still only barely able to function given the lack of passengers.Airlines were said to have reduced their routes from 10 to 5 because of the skeletal operations as people were returning to their destinations after the February 25th Presidential Election but the movement still wasn’t much.
The next set of elections for the governorship positions in the 36 states of the Federation except for Kogi, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo; as well as state assembly elections would hold on March 11.
Mr. Olumide Ohunayo, an aviation analyst, claimed that the upcoming elections have severely hampered business operations nationwide.Because of the tension in the country, he claimed, many businesses are operating on a skeleton staff. He claimed that this is unheard of in developed nations.
“So, we need to transition our elections away from the current manual approach” he stated. “When there are elections, citizens in developed nations carry on with their daily activities.
Airlines are not operating, businesses are closed, and our nation is losing more money today. We must also strengthen security
Nigerians are worried about unrest following elections. This has an impact on the nation’s economy. If you are unable to generate income, it has a ripple effect that impacts the country’s economy.”
