Even in the week leading up to the general elections in 2023, violence in the South East area has persisted.
48 hours before the election, Mr. Oyibo Chukwu, a Labour Party candidate for the Enugu East Senatorial District, was assassinated.
When Chukwu was leaving a campaign event, he was killed Alongside Five of his supporters in Enugu’s Amechi, Awkunanaw local government area.
Also, it was said that the assassins burned him inside his vehicle, along with his followers.
Chijioke Edeoga, the Labour Party’s candidate for governor, acknowledged the sad occurrence and said that political parties that felt threatened by the emergence of the Labour Party in the state were assassinating his party members.
The South East, where Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, is from, has long been a hotspot.
Security authorities have reassured locals that they are in control of the situation despite suspected extremists’ threats to sabotage elections in the area.
The event, which Edeoga claims was driven by politics, has not yet received a response from the Enugu police command.
