Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has commended Nigerian wrestler and Ondo State-born Olympian, Odunayo Adekuoroye on winning gold for her country at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Adekuoroye won the gold medal in the women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling on Friday after defeating Indian competitor, Anshu Malik.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, the Commonwealth champion was praised by Akeredolu for her fortitude and bravery in the face of extreme pressure.
As the first wrestler to win a third straight gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, Adekuoroye made history for herself and her nation, the governor remarked.
“Our own Odunayo Adekuoroye has recorded another feat for the country. We are particularly proud that she displayed courage and resilience to clinch her win even in the face of intense pressure.
“We are, indeed, thrilled that an Ondo State indigene has brought pride to the black race, the Nation and the Sunshine State in particular. Her victory is a collective pride for the country,” he said.
