The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) opposed the proposed concession of four international airports in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt, they however supported the federal government’s proposal to establish a national carrier.
On visiting the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), one of the aviation unions, in Lagos, NLC National President Comrade Joseph Ajaero remarked that Nigeria needed a national carrier because the nation could no longer rely solely on foreign carriers.
He believes that the nation cannot sustain international airlines that take advantage of it and compete unfairly with its own carriers.
Nonetheless, he was against the proposed concession of the international airports and the demolition of the FAAN, NAMA, NCAA, and other organizations’ office buildings in Lagos to pave way for the airport city project called Aerotropolis, saying the idea is a joke of the century and was dead on arrival.
“I also saw the Minister of Aviation talking about making unions in the aviation industry illegal, and that is the biggest joke of the century because he lacks the authority to do so. Don’t believe anyone who says he wants to take over the aviation industry; he cannot do so without following the proper procedures.”
The NLC President criticized the Aviation Minister for failing to inaugurate Boards of Aviation Agencies in the previous eight years and added that all contracts and appointments were improper, invalid, and illegal.
Comrade Abdulrasaq Saidu, Secretary General of the ANAP, outlined the issues they want the national organization to solve, including the concession of airports, Condition of Service, CoS, planned demolition of agency buildings, and reducing the influence of unions in relation to workers penned as essential workers and the absence of Boards of Directors in the past eight years.
