A 54-year-old man has been detained by the Cross River State Police Command on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend in the Calabar South Local Government Area.
The arrest was verified by the command’s spokesman, SP Irene Ugbo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Calabar.
She claimed that on Tuesday at Abasi Obori Street, a minor argument resulted in the suspect attacking the victim, who was only given the name Ndereke.
According to Ugbo, the arrest was made by members of the Uwanse Divisional Police Headquarters in response to a distress call about the occurrence.
The victim was taken by the police directly to UCTH, the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. She unfortunately didn’t make it, as the on-call doctor declared her dead when she arrived.
Her remains were placed in the morgue in accordance with established protocol so that an autopsy could be performed to determine the precise cause of her demise.
The police spokeswoman stated, “The suspect is already in our custody, and we make sure that he receives the full force of punishment for his alleged behavior”.
