EPL: Man Utd ‘doubled transfer budget’ after 4-0 humiliation at Brentford

Manchester United were forced to double their transfer budget following their shock 4-0 defeat to Brentford, The Athletic reports.

The Red Devils conceded all four goals in the opening 35 minutes of the game in mid-August.

The result left Erik ten Hag’s men bottom of the Premier League after the first two games of the season, as they had lost at home to Brighton on the opening weekend.

It is believed the club’s original transfer budget for the summer was £120 million but this was increased to “nearly twice that size” following the Brentford fixture.

Senior players pushed United’s hierarchy to urgently dip back into the transfer market and that owner Joel Glazer was persuaded to splash the cash as football director John Murtough understood that Ten Hag required more backing.

Before their trip to the Gtech Community Stadium, only three new signings arrived at Old Trafford – Lisandro Martinez for £55 million, Tyrell Malacia for £14.6 million and Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

But the club’s two biggest signings came in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

They paid £70 million to sign five-time Champions League winner Casemiro from Real Madrid and spent £85.5million to make Antony their second-most expensive transfer of all time behind Paul Pogba.
