Fuel Scarcity: FG directs NMDPRA to penalize unscrupulous oil Marketers

The Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) was given a directive by the federal government on Wednesday to penalize any oil marketer engaged in the theft of petroleum goods.

This is similar to how it previously attributed the rising price and shortage of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in some regions of the nation to oil marketers who participate in racketeering activities.

Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, disclosed this when he briefed State House reporters on the conclusion of the Federal Executive Council,(FEC).

President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the meeting on Wednesday at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.Despite the Nigeria NNPC’s efforts to assure a steady supply of fuel across the country, Sylva claimed that problems still exist at distribution centers. He clarified that the ministry had given orders to stop racketeering, which had caused fuel prices to skyrocket. But despite the continued supply difficulties, these instructions have not been followed.

The petroleum minister emphasized that PMS is now widely accessible and attributed the shortage to reasons outside of his ministry’s control. The distribution issue, he insisted, will not affect the elections on February 25 and March 11.According to Sylva, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received assurances from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. that petroleum supplies will be accessible for the election.
