Gunmen attack, steal kogi tribunal petition documents

Gunmen attacked the secretary of the Kogi State governorship election Tribunal, Mr. David Umar Mike, and his colleagues on their way to the tribunal venue in Lokoja.

The perpetrators, wielding firearms, targeted the officials just before the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office, around 1:20 PM on December 4, 2023. The assailants stole sensitive petition documents related to the recently concluded gubernatorial election, which belonged to five political parties, including the Action Alliance (AA), Action People’s Party (APP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The stolen items included two essential record books for the proceedings and a bag containing personal belongings of Mr. Mike.

On the same day at approximately 6:20 PM, Mr. Mike, accompanied by his Confidential Secretary and Assistant Secretary, reported the incident to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

According to his account in the police report, armed and hooded men surrounded his car, shot into the air, and forcibly took the petition documents after ransacking the vehicle.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Onuoha Benthrand, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and urged the public to avoid making statements that could prejudice the ongoing investigation.
