Panic has gripped residents of Iree town in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State following an assault on a Nigerian Army personnel by hoodlums at the Poly Junction area on Tuesday. The soldier, whose identity remains unknown, was left wounded, and the cause of the disagreement leading to the attack is yet to be determined.
Eyewitnesses refrained from intervening during the altercation due to fear of reprisals from the hoodlums. A trader at Poly Junction, speaking anonymously, recounted the incident, revealing that the soldier was assaulted by thugs led by a notorious figure known as Gbedu. Despite pleas to stop, the hoodlums continued beating the soldier, causing injuries to his head. Subsequently, other soldiers arrived, taking the wounded personnel away.
The incident has instilled fear in the town, prompting the closure of shops and keeping residents, including students of the polytechnic, indoors. Concerns about potential reprisal attacks by soldiers have contributed to the heightened tension in the area.
Confirming the incident, Kehinde Adeleke, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, acknowledged the attack on army personnel but noted that the exact cause of the assault was still unclear.
