The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has received N168.8 billion through tax levy in 13 years, according to Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the agency’s director general.
The organization also predicted that if Nigeria produced two million software developers to match global demand, it could earn up to $40 billion yearly.
At a joint stakeholder meeting with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa said that a recent PwC assessment indicated that there was a demand for around four million software engineers internationally.
“On average, a developer earns between $25,000 to $130,000. So, let’s say because you are in Nigeria and you are working remotely, you will earn only $20,000, if we can provide those two million developers to the global value chain, Nigeria will earn 40 billion US dollars per annum, which is more than the remittance and oil and gas,” he said.
Muhammad Nami, the Chairman of FIRS, acknowledged that from 2008 to December 2022, the service collected N168,847,118,268.22 on behalf of NITDA.The service will continue to assist NITDA in fulfilling its mandate of implementing national information technology policy, according to Nami, who was represented by Group Lead, General Tax Operations Group, FIRS, Abba Kabiru.
