A 12-year-old blind girl in Baro, Agaie LGA, Niger State, received successful cataract surgery thanks to the support of Mainstream Foundation.
The Ramatu Shuaibu, recovered her vision after three years of cataract treatment. Ramatu is in primary three.
The Mainstream Foundation, Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited’s Corporate Social Responsibility division, sponsored the cataract surgery at the Eye Center of the Minna General Hospital (MESL).
Ramatu could now see and recognize objects, said Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Halima Isah in Minna yesterday following the successful procedure on both eyes.
Ramatu’s father, Mallam Shuaibu Mohammed, described the ordeal and the numerous fruitless attempts he made before joining the Mainstream Foundation’s medical outreach in Bida.
“We praise Allah today for the Mainstream’s intervention. My daughter can now see and very soon she will go back to school to continue her education,” Ramatu’s father said.
Deputy Programme Manager for Mainstream Foundation Zayyanu Illo Umar stated that “Ramatu’s case was only one of many that the foundation dealt with during medical outreaches in remote areas.”
“We had to send her to Minna General Hospital so that she could meet the local physicians,# he continued. As a result, when they arrived in Minna, they informed us of the financial ramifications and successfully performed the two eye procedures. The girl can see now.”
In addition to providing financial assistance for the girl’s uniform and other requirements, Mr. Illo said that the foundation met with the head of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) to guarantee that the girl was re-enrolled in school
