Under the cover of night on November 24, 2023, Kaduna Electric carried out a surprise operation, nabbing Mr. Opafola Abiodun at No. 18 Mopa Road, Kaduna.
Abiodun, accused of siphoning electricity from the 11KV Leventis Feeder, was apprehended in the act, with an external bypass on meter number 04190482713 serving as evidence.
According to Engr. U. A. Gumel, the Head of Unit for Non-MD Metering, Abiodun had been disconnected from the power supply on September 28, 2023, and was slapped with a total charge of N104,823.18.
Abubarka confirmed the legitimacy of the charges, turning it into a binding legal document.
Gumel clarified that instead of settling the outstanding amount, Abiodun took the illicit route of reconnecting during the evening and night hours. The vigilant surveillance team, conducting routine monitoring, caught him red-handed on November 24, 2023, leading to prompt action. The matter was duly reported to the police, resulting in the arrest of the energy theft culprit.
Gumel emphasized that the case is now within the jurisdiction of Kaduna Electric’s security unit, gearing up for prosecution as they clamp down on electricity pilferage.
