Martin Dubravka, the goalkeeper for Newcastle United, will be in a unique position when his team faces Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on February 26.
The Slovakian, who has played for both sides this year, has the opportunity to win a trophy or a medal, Dubravka signed a season-long loan with the Red Devils during the summer transfer window. Under Erik ten Hag, he has had difficulty finding playing time and has only made two club appearances. Yet, Aston Villa in the third round and Burnley in the next round were the opponents in both of those appearances in the Carabao Cup
The peculiarity of the situation is that Dubravka was called up by Newcastle in the January transfer window before his loan period was up. The Magpies’ decision to loan Karl Darlow to Hull City led to this choice. Dubravka won’t be allowed to play for his team because of his Carabao Cup appearance for Manchester United. As a result, Loris Karius, a player who has never played for the Magpies, will be the guy that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe switches to. Dubravka will be able to lift the trophy but not the win medal if Newcastle prevails in the game.
Nonetheless, in accordance with the competition’s rules, he is eligible to get a medal if his team loses against Ten Hag’s Manchester United
“In addition to the Cup, the Management Committee will give 30 souvenirs to the winning club in the Finals and 30 souvenirs to the losing club. Other souvenirs can be provided with the consent of the Management Committee but will be at the expense of the club’s request.
