Azeez Hassan, a 46-year-old man, allegedly lit his wife, Olayinka Hassan, on fire because she refused to prepare meals for him.
Following a report made by the wife’s father to the Ibogun divisional police headquarters, the husband was detained by the police in Ogun State.The victim, a mother of one, was taken to a hospital in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, according to the father, who reported the incident to the police on October 22, 2022.
According to a statement made by the spokesman for the Ogun State Police, Abimbola Oyeyemi, on Friday, the DPO of the Ibogun division, CSP Samuel Oladele, has deployed his men in response to the report, but the suspect had escaped, However, he was eventually apprehended on January 22, 2023.
When questioned, the suspect, who had claimed to have fled to the Benin Republic, admitted to committing the murder but placed the blame on the devil, according to Oyeyemi.Oyeyemi quoted the man as saying, “he asked the victim to prepare food for him, but instead of the victim to prepare his food, she was busy washing clothes,” during her account of the events leading up to the assault.The police official quoted Azeez as saying that he became irritated due to hunger and “poured gasoline on her and set her on fire.”He admitted that it was his clothes the woman was washing after questioning.
Lanre Bankole, the commissioner of police for Ogun State, has since forwarded the matter to the state CIID’s Homicide Section for more research and potential legal action.
