A distressing incident unfolded on Wednesday in Aiyedun Quarters, Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State, leading to the tragic demise of a nine-day-old baby and her 30-year-old mother. The sorrowful event took place when an overhead water tank collapsed onto a one-bedroom detached bungalow near a primary health centre within the quarters.
Bose Sanusi, the mother of the deceased infant, had christened the baby just a day before the tragic incident, as recounted by sources in the area. Fortunately, the baby girl’s grandmother and elder brother narrowly escaped harm, being in the kitchen, unaffected by the collapse.
The lifeless bodies of the infant and her mother were subsequently removed from the wreckage and placed in the mortuary at the state specialist hospital. Confirming the heartbreaking occurrence, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that the mother and her infant daughter lost their lives in the building collapse. An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the overhead water tank’s collapse.
