In Imo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the invitation extended to its chieftains ahead of the gubernatorial and assembly elections.
Former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, his ex-deputy Gerald Irona, and House of Representatives member-elect Ikenga Ugochinyere were summoned by police for suspected murder.
Collins Opurozor, the PDP Publicity Secretary, issued a statement on Thursday accusing the police of assisting Governor Hope Uzodinma and seeking the resignation of CP Mohammed Barde.
According to the spokesman, the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration has resorted to deploying security forces rather than polling its popularity.
Opurozor said that Uzodinma wanted key opposition figures out of the public eye before Saturday in order to prevent them from voting.
The scheme is to “rig and reconstruct a weak and pliable APC-dominated House of Assembly in Imo that can only sing his praises,” he said.
The PDP stated that Irona’s home was raided last week by security officers “on the instructions of Uzodinma” and that he has been “detained for no wrongdoing” since then.
Opurozor said that the police “had allowed themselves to be mistreated” by the governor and requested the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to restructure the Imo command.
The statement advocated for a fair playing field for everybody and sufficient security for voters as they exercise their right to vote.
