Off the Atlantic coast of Brass in Bayelsa State, gunmen suspected to be sea robbers struck, targeting fishermen in a brutal attack that left one dead and four abducted.
The coastal enclave, mainly inhabited by fisher folks, witnessed the incident over the weekend. The attackers not only took the lives of their victims but also made off with their engines and fishing gear.
Sources revealed that during the assault, two fishermen sustained injuries, and unfortunately, one of them succumbed to his injuries before receiving medical aid.
Muhammed Musa, the spokesperson for the state police command, stated that he was yet to receive a briefing on the situation when contacted.
Expressing outrage, Brass council chairman Hanson Alabo-Karika condemned the attack and abduction of the fishermen. He called for swift action by security agents to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for this unwarranted and barbaric act.
Alabo-Karika emphasized that such acts should not go unpunished, highlighting the need for security measures to maintain the prevailing peace in the council, a result of deliberate strategies implemented by the Governor Douye Diri-led administration.
As the festive season approaches, the chairman urged community leaders in the area to be vigilant, paying close attention to activities and visitors to ensure the continued peace and security of the region.
