The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and the Federal Government of Nigeria were named in a lawsuit that was announced on Saturday by SERAP over what it calls the “arbitrary and unconstitutional fine of N5 million imposed on Channels Television.
“The fine imposed on Channels Television, according to SERAP, a non-governmental, non-profit organization working to increase openness, accountability, and the defense of economic and social rights in Nigeria, was an obvious breach of press freedom and the right to free speech for Nigerians.

Recall that The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) fined Channels Television N5 million for interview with Datti Baba-Ahmed,a vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party.
It pointed out that the broadcast broke some rules of the broadcasting code since it was explosive and had the potential to cause a riot.

According to the broadcasting rules, broadcasters must make sure that no show contains material that could be construed as undermining established authority.
He noted that the NBC had frequently hired Channels Television to take the public’s interest into account prior to the broadcast of any Interview.
