Seven people were, yesterday burnt to death when a 14-passenger Mazda bus marked: KJA 699 GY was gutted by fire at Iyana Oworo, a section of the Third Mainland bridge. The incident resulted in traffic gridlock along the axis.
Permanent Secretary Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said four females, two male adults and one male child were burnt in the incident.
According to him, the incident occurred due to recklessness and overspeeding by the driver, which resulted in the fire with 12 passengers trapped.
He said: “The driver escaped with some burns, while three female adults were rescued and rushed to Gbagada General Hospital.
“A male adult was attended to by Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) at the scene, unfortunately, seven victims were burnt to death in the bus.
“All the remains have been bagged by the Agency’s LRT Paramedics, LASAMBUS officials and handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
“LRT alongside LRU Paramedics Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), LASAMBUS, SHEMU and NPF are responders at the scene. “Road is partially opened for vehicular activities.”
