In a recent development, the Ogun State Police Command disclosed that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the reported robbery and sexual assault incidents involving students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade. The affected students reside in Ode Remo and Ipara within the Remo North Local Government area.
As stated by SP Omolola Odutola, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Taiwo Oredoyin, Taiwo Kuti, and Folorunsho Saheed were the individuals taken into custody. The daring armed robbers were nabbed on Monday, November 27, during a routine stop-and-search operation carried out by the police in the Ode and Ipara Remo communities.
The command’s press release highlights the significant strides made in apprehending the suspected armed robbers who had invaded Ode Remo and Ipara, subjecting female students to assault and instilling fear in the nearby tertiary institutions. Despite initial denials by the suspects, one of their victims positively identified a member of the three-man gang terrorizing Gateway Polytechnic.
Responding to recent shooting incidents at Gateway Polytechnic, Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, organized a security summit leading to a proactive operation based on gathered intelligence.
On November 27, 2023, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a stop-and-search operation in the Ode Remo and Ipara areas, intercepting a gang of three suspected armed individuals on a motorcycle. In attempting to evade arrest, the suspects resorted to violence but were eventually apprehended.
The arrested individuals, Taiwo Oredoyin (27), Taiwo Kuti (35), and Folorunsho Saheed (36), all residents of Isara town in Ogun State, were found in possession of a locally fabricated pistol with two live cartridges and two Samsung phones during a search.
Currently undergoing interrogation as part of the preliminary investigation, the suspects will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department upon completion of this phase for a more comprehensive and discreet examination.
It is worth noting that students of the institution had previously faced challenges with robbery attacks, resulting in two students being shot and others reportedly subjected to sexual assault.
