Mr. Olufemi Olaleye, a representative of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), stated at the Ogun State Governorship Election Tribunal in Abeokuta, the state capital, yesterday that the examination body does not save duplicate copies of candidates’ certificates.
Additionally, he said that WAEC does not issue original certificates more than once.
“The original certificate given to the candidate will be forwarded to WAEC” for verification, according to Olaleye, in order to determine whether or not someone took the council’s examination.
A copy of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s 1978 WAEC certificate, which was annexed to the form he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had previously been requested by the tribunal from the examination council.
Abiodun was accused of forging his WAEC certificate by Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the March 18 governorship election.
Abiodun “presented a forged West African Examinations Council School Certificate of June 1978 to the 1st Respondent” (INEC) on July 25, 2022, according to Adebutu’s appeal.
The petitioner also claimed that he had written to WAEC to inquire about the validity of the examination certificate that Abiodun had given to INEC.
The WAEC official testified before the tribunal but did not go into the witness box, stating that “the requested certificate is not here with me.”
Olaleye was permitted to submit a copy of the subpoena that was sent to the examination body and that brought him before the tribunal as evidence, nevertheless.
The WAEC officer was dismissed right away, and her testimony before the tribunal is listed as PW73.
