Women in Energy Network demands programs that support equal opportunity

Women in Energy Network (WIEN), a group of female energy industry employees who work in the upstream, downstream, and midstream areas, has pushed for the inclusion of women in the energy sector at a rate of 35%.

The group thinks policies and programs that support equal opportunity, gender diversity, and inclusion in the workplace can achieve affirmative action goals aimed at building a more fair and inclusive energy industry.

While she briefed reporters in Lagos in an event planned by the network to honor International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 4, Funmi Ogbue, president of WIEN, made this statement.

The president’s representative on the WIEN Board of Trustees, Mrs. Charlotte Essiet, added that there are a ton of funding opportunities for female entrepreneurs and companies in the energy sector and urged their members to take advantage of the funds.

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) established the $20 million (N9.2 billion) Women in Energy funds in collaboration with NEXIM Bank.

Notwithstanding the sector’s importance to Nigeria’s growth and development, the president remarked that women still face major barriers to entry and progression in the energy industry, adding that “women play a crucial role in pushing innovation, excellence, and progress in this field.”

“While we rejoice in the strides we have made in promoting women’s roles in the energy industry, we are equally conscious of the obstacles that still need to be overcome. In Nigeria, only 22% of the workforce in the energy sector is made up of women, and only 12% worldwide, according to a recent report by the International Energy Agency, occupy senior management roles. This highlights the need for concerted efforts to promote gender diversity in the sector, and we believe that the new administration has a critical role to play in this regard.”

Bimbo Onakomaiya, the WIEN IWD session’s chair, reaffirmed that the group would keep pushing for greater inclusive engagement of women in the energy industry with the new administration.

“We have a starting point and a destination. No, we haven’t reached our goals of, say, 50%, 40%, or 35% female participation.Though It is still a work in progress and a journey “Because there will soon be a new administration, we will continue to campaign for the inclusion of women in the upper levels of the energy industry.”
