World Cup: They’re not needed – Merson advises Southgate against playing two England stars

Arsenal legend, Paul Merson, has advised England manager Gareth Southgate against playing the likes of Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier in his side’s 2022 FIFA World Cup first match against Iran on Monday.

According to Merson, both Mount and Trippier are not needed when England tackle Iran, adding that it will be a tough game for the Three Lions as Iran have a great coach in Carlos Queiroz.

England are in Group B at the World Cup and will clash with Iran, Wales and USA.

“I worry about this game [England vs Iran] because Iran have a brilliant coach in Carlos Queiroz, who will set up his team to nullify our attacking threat,” Merson told Daily Star.

“Mason Mount and Trippier will certainly play in other matches, but I don’t think they’re needed in this game.”

The kick-off time for the England vs Iran game is 2 pm at Khalifa International Stadium.
